Brunch at The Breakfast Club Cafe – London Bridge

The question is where can I get the best breakfast in London? Well who knows, when you look into these things on google (and review websites)  there are hundreds of places and recommendations…

So I knew I was heading to watch my friend do the marathon at  Canada Water, so looked into places near London Bridge which reduced my google search and where did I find but no other that The Breakfast Club Cafes … when I started to read about these places it blew my mind – an 80s throwback experience that serves breakfast. WOW!

I packed my bag as quick as I could and headed there like a crazed woman in search of the 80s (and brunch obviously).

Following the success of their Soho cafe, opened in 2005, The Breakfast Club has since expanded to a number of other London locations. The London Bridge, opened in 2014, comes with a license so you can have a beer or maybe a more civilised Bloody Mary with your breakfast – happy days!

It serves a wide selection of breakfasts to start your day, it then continues serving up fab things till early evening. The breakfasts are not just your standard fry up; you can choose from a US variation featuring maple syrup pancakes, to a Latin American breakfast burrito.

Like the Spitalfields and the Battersea cafes,  London Bridge also has a secret. Hidden beneath The Breakfast Club in London Bridge is Call Me Mr Lucky – a concrete den that serves cocktails with lanterns and hidden alcoves.

So … Phew after reading all the reviews on this place I was expecting a huge queue but I got straight in and was seated by the really friendly staff.

Food loves…
I decided it was time to try something new so opted for the veggie breakfast burrito filled with  scrambled egg, roasted peppers, Portobello mushroom, gucamole, cheddar and spicy pepper sauce. Delicious.

The  atmosphere of the cafe is just right. The music plays, the staff are chatty and it’s just a happy place to start the day. The design features that made me smile to myself where the fired egg lamp shade (where do you find such a thing), the smiley face cups and the hidden bar concept.

A quick trip down memory lane – Camden Town & Market

A sunny Tuesday afternoon before I go to a blogging masterclass… Where else shall I kill two hours than in my old stomping ground of
Camden Town. It’s hot and the place is buzzing.

I decided not to eat in my usual places of Camden Kitchen and Hache and head  straight down to the Camden Market. I had a quick  mooch around and spend some time looking at the food offerings and see if anything caught my design eye.

vanessa myers - camden

Tanakatsu – a Japanese Katsu specialist caught my eye and the food looked amazing. All dishes where made to order taking  about 5 minutes to cook from fresh, with a price tag of around £5.50.

Chicken Katsu Box – Tanakatsu

Food loves:
I went for the Chicken Katsu Box which came with a pumpkin croquette, an Ebi Fry (prawn Katsu) , rice salad and pickle and a side of curry sauce.  The Chicken was delicately breaded and fried, and served hot.

2015-04-07 16.11.23To be honest I was over whelmed by the beauty of such a dish served in a take away box, it was delicious and the pickles that accompanied the dish where full of taste. This is probably one of the best meals I have eaten with a plastic fork.

You can really tell these guys put there passion into their food. I really never expected such great food from a vendor in the Camden Market –  WOWZERS. Camdens food offering has really raised the bar since I worked down there!

It’s been a little while since I spent time in Camden Market and I loved being back. But what really blew my away was the tribute to Amy Winehouse it reminded me of the time I use to see her walking (sometimes staggering)  around Camden. Sleep tight Amy.

I had a lovely few hours spent back in my old stomping ground of Camden and the food blew me away. Camden Markets food offering seems to have moved on from the limted selection it had when I worked there may moons ago. I will be coming back to spend more trips down memory lane and sampling the new food delights.

Thanks Camden… I’ve missed you xxx

Flippin Burger!! A New street food market in Birmingham…

Now this is interesting.  After blogging about Saturdays Spring Market only yesterday and my love affair for the Digbeth Dinning Club there seems to be a new guy coming to the Birmingham table.

Taste and Liquor  will be launching a Global Feast – IVAL and weekly outdoor market set up by the people behind the Holi Rave at the new pop up venue on Lower Essex Street.

The event launches on Saturday 30th May 2015 from 12 – 6pm and will take place every week after.

Taste and Liquors  point of difference to the other, more established food markets is a focus on more globally inspired street food from the Midlands and cocktails classes. Looking forward to popping along …

A sunshine filled Spring market – Birmingham, Digbeth

The sun was shining, music pumping and the smell from the food was immense. By looking at the queues it felt like the whole of Birmingham had dropped by with us to visit the Spring Market at The Bond in Digbeth.

Spring Market, Digbeth

Digbeth pop-up street food market gathers together a small selection of the best street food traders from Birmingham and beyond. This is the place  for foodies to catch such local food gurus as the Original Patty Men, Routemaster Bus Bar and The Bournville Waffle co. The Spring Market starts at midday and runs until 6pm. Entrance is £1.50 for adults and kids get in FREE.  Dishes can range from £3 – £7.50.

The Spring Market is set by the canal and has a great street vibe which I am sure the sunshine helped. There is a good variety of food and drink, I loved it.

Food loves …
The HungryToad got me excited by the food offering and the stall design, it was a little bit  shabby with its hand drawn menu and corrigated walls but the sparkly signage won me over  .. and I queued in a very long queue for these guys culinary delights. I opted for the chicken wings and the halloumi chips. Simple & delicious with a bit of sparkle!

Design loves
It was pure eye candy looking at all the ideas people had come up with to create and support their brands and food ideas. I loved it here, not just for the food but for the draw of the creativity that surrounded me.

3 stalls from the Spring Market that got my design heart pumping:

1. The Gamekeeper
Serving wraps, a shredded beef brisket and a veggie option of melted halloumi, the stall had a traditional country feel in true keeping of a Gamekeeper vision.

2. Original Patty Man
Serving kick ass burgers with a kickass branding… I fell in love with this pop up, infact am sure part of me wanted to jump behing the counter and help out. There was just something electric about this little place and it followed through into there brand!

3. Smoqued
Smoqued served the most beautiful, eye catching tacos I have ever seen from a bright yellow 1973 Citroen H Van. This little yellow machine just ozzed class and the food presentation was out of this world.

2015-04-18 14.08.17All of this was washed down with a gin …  A little bit of Saturday design and food heaven,  2 hours well spent – I’d say.

ROYAL ASCOT POPS UP – Michelin star dining goes to London

Pop-up restaurants are quite literally popping up all over the country! This latest restaurant is probably the poshest one to date!

Royal Ascot is only round the courner, Ascot launched a competition to find diners for the World’s first ever, horse-drawn, Michelin-starred dining experience. It arrived at Observation Point, Queen’s Walk at London’s Southbank yesterday (16th April), giving two winners an exclusive preview of there fine dining menu. Looking at Ascots twitter feed it was a huge success creating plenty of intrigue,  which any PR stunt should do …

The winners of the competition sampled a three-course Royal Ascot taster menu with select wines all prepared by Michelin-starred chefs Michael Caines and Phil Howard who are both hosting restaurants at this year’s Royal meeting. Michael & Phil partnered with Steve Golding (Executive Chef, Ascot Racecourse) to create the breathtaking pop-up restaurant.

Video link

The beautiful mini restaurant sits inside a Victorian landau carriage matching the ones that can be seen in the Royal Procession, has space for just two diners. The winners where welcomed on board by Ascot’s famous Greencoats, before being served Champagne and canapés. They went on a tour of London’s Southbank, St Paul’s Cathedral and around London.  Each course was served at a fixed point on the route as I think trying to eat and drink whilst being pulled by two the horses called Otto and Bullet might have been a bit tricky!

A big well done to the Ascot team combing a new concept (pop ups) with such a prestigious brand steeped with tradition. Just wish I’d entered the competiton… maybe next year.

Carlsberg poster… Probably the best poster in the world

Can the carlsberg  campaign get any better than this?   Surely this is genius, a billboard dispensing beer it has got to be the best marketing idea so far this year… I love it!

The billboard advert equipped with a beer pump popped up early Wednesday near to the Old Truman Bewery in Shoreditch, London offering visitors a half of lager from a tap located under the slogan ‘Probably the best poster in the world’.

Carlsberg marketing bosses said the promotion will be rolled out across the country. Whoooo to one coming to Rugby.

Genius!

Sunday Afternoon tea with the girls – FAWSLEY HALL HOTEL & SPA, Northampton

Steeped in tradition and history Fawsley Hall Hotel & Spa in Northamptonshire is a beautiful country house hotel surrounded by acres of beautiful gardens and parkland, so we couldn’t think of a better place to spend a 40th Birthday celebration (not mine) with my ladies.

Fawsley Hall is a beautiful place and this was my 2nd visit (previously I stayed over and used the spa facilities – equally a good evening) … Walking into the great hall always takes your breath away its  beyond stunning. We was seated in the restaurant area so was slightly disappointed we where not in my beloved great hall. Maybe next time …

Champagne

We chose to have the Fawsley Full Afternoon Tea which was served with champagne and it didn’t disappoint.

There was a fab choice of finger sandwiches that were fresh and tasty served with some lovely home made fancies (the raspberry macaroons rocked), and followed with some great scones along with plenty jam and cream.

Deal or No Deal – My experience

The question maybe where has hungry caterpillar been? Its all been a bit quiet on the blogging front but have no fear I am back and been sourcing loads of delicious info on my travels… I’ve been on Deal or no Deal in the dream factory in Bristol and have just grace the screen of Channel 4 for the last month.

Now if you’d have asked me a year ago would I appear on my Dads favourite (not even mine) TV programme with an opportunity to win £250,000 by just opening red boxes … I’d have told you to jog on!

But the strangest things happen to you in this world and due to a Facebook post and too much yellowtail red wine … I found myself applying to the be apart of the dream factory at Deal Or No Deal on Channel 4.

A year went by and with slight memory loss (am not going to lie)  I’d actually forgot I had applied when I received a phone call from Dan from Deal Or No Deal to ask me about my application form. Shocked, slightly excited and wondering if it was a joke … was my initial response.

2014-10-27 17.14.04
Selfie – just getting ready to leave!

But in full Myers style I went with it and got through the telephone interview and was asked if I wanted to pop to Bristol for the auditions and Dan popped my info to me via email along with my bronze ticket … and this is where it all began, TOTAL PANIC especially in when I read you had to get the silver ticket as part of your audition ….. (I have never been good at tests or being competitive… Driven maybe!!!) but I told myself to just go with it and that’s exactly what I did ….

Audition day came … I’d researched the show – watched a few programmes and off I set to Bristol with my good old friend Vicki (chosen carefully from my friend to keep me calm and just have a laugh) … We arrived.

I must admit I was scared that I’d fail and not bring home to my friends that silver ticket and surround this experience with sadness but to my surprise I got one!!! (my friends sad they never doubted it and I love them for that). I can’t tell you all the details of the day as we sign contracts along the way to not let us reveal specific details about the show …. but after a long day and please when you watch the show give these people credit as its a tough audition … I was shaking in my size 5 boots at times ! But at the end of the day when I got back to Vikki I knew i had done my best and secretly was aching to get that gold ticket as it just seemed like too much fun to miss out on!

They had said at my audition it could take up to 2 years to hear back  so not to really think too much about it…

The phone rang from an unknown number and it wasn’t a PPI claim …. But by GOSH 10 days later and I have received my gold ticket… Whooooooo!!!

Me with my practice box – Ready to meet Noel!

I’ve got to admit from a girl who use to suffer from panic attack this ways taking me way out my comfort zone but sod it you have got to go with it …

I arrived in Bristol with a car full of clothes and nervous/excitement feeling… but my nerves soon went when I met everyone. Everyone was beyond friendly and I felt part of the group from the of set and everything you see on the TV is true these people are electric and uber friendly.

Me and my fellow newbie – Liam

My first game came and boy was I nervous but you just get into the swing of things and hope people do well.

My time there went quickly doing 24 show … you see people come and go and it all happens really quickly. You see games that change people lives in a good way and some in a sad way. It really is a dream factory but a game of luck that can also be truly cruel…

2014-11-03 10.28.06
Looking glam lol! I have never wore some much make up!

Everything is done by random and you dont know when your game is… My day came and luckily my friends had turned up. I don’t think I could have done it with out them.  I was so scared!

I was stood there getting mic’d up stood on an X, meeting Noel and I did think to myself how the bloody hell did I get here and can I run …

My actual game flew by I must admit it didn’t go exactly to plan I hit the £250,000 in my first box and it went down hill from there… after several offers and digging my heals in. The Banker offered  me £13,000 that was the best offer I had had and in my eyes time to get the hell out off there! There was a Deal or No Deal twist where the Banker offer for me to give him my money back and go for what was in my box which was £50,000 (I found out in the end) or a 1p …

I stuck  with my £13,000 and I am very happy with that it will give me time off to spend on this blog and drive my design business forward Creative Caterpillar.

What an experience …. only 2,700 people have ever played the game to date and I have met some fab friends…  and feel like the luckiest girl in the world!

Give it a go… www.dealornodeal.co.uk/show/appeal

Anyway best get cracking with this Blog … I have loads of stuff to share!
